Diet and nutrition for liver cancer

Proper nutrition with cancer is the basis for successful therapy. In particular, this concerns the postoperative recovery stage after radical operations – partial removal of the liver or its transplantation.

Diet in liver cancer is designed to perform a metabolic correction to facilitate the work of the liver. Another task of dietotherapy is to stabilize the weight: you can not allow a sharp reduction in the weight of the patient.

General principles of proper nutrition

The general principle of nutrition in liver cancer is the delivery to the body of all the necessary substances and trace elements. The diet should be full, and the products – easily digestible. In the diet must be present: easily digestible protein, fiber, vitamin compounds.

If water is trapped in the body (which is quite typical for oncological lesions of the liver), use of liquid, and also table salt should be limited. However, if liver cancer is accompanied by severe dyspeptic disorders – vomiting or diarrhea, then the amount of water and salt is required, on the contrary, to increase.

In liver cancer, especially in the postoperative period, food should be regular. It is necessary to break the daily norm of calories and nutrients into 5-6 parts, that is, one should eat every 2-3 hours. With protein deficiency and a sharp decrease in weight, it is recommended to increase the content of animals (and vegetable) proteins.

Recommended dietary meats (without high amounts of fat) – chicken, rabbit, veal, low-fat varieties of fish (cod, pike perch, navaga, sea bass, etc.), dairy products.

It is useful to use a small amount of low-fat varieties of cheese. Eggs, although they are a universal source of protein and other substances necessary for the life of the body, are not recommended to be consumed in an amount exceeding 2-3 pieces per week.

The same goes for butter. Vegetable oil should also be consumed moderately, although olive oil of cold pressing is useful in liver cancer because it contains monounsaturated fatty acids. Linseed oil and corn are also useful.

The way of preparation of products should be gentle:

From such utensils, as a frying pan, people with any oncological diseases should be categorically refused. Sausage products are not recommended: if you really want, you can afford a limited number of cooked varieties, you should not eat smoked sausage, fat, sharp meat snacks.

Since liver cancer often decreases appetite, and at the stage of treatment with radiation and chemotherapy, the appetite can disappear altogether, nutritionists sometimes allow patients to consume delicacies: caviar, salted fish. It is well suited for the purpose of strengthening the appetite of sauerkraut.

The main principle of nutrition in liver cancer can be expressed in 3 words – diversity, naturalness and usefulness. With liver cancer, any meal should begin with untreated thermally (raw) foods, then you can go to cooked or stewed food. The composition should be perfectly balanced, and in no case should you overeat.

Each meal should end with a feeling of mild hunger: overload the digestive system (and hence the liver) in no way. It is also important to thoroughly chew food in order to facilitate the process of digestion in the intestine as much as possible.

In liver cancer, a diet after an operation to remove a part of the liver should be combined with other therapeutic procedures. Great value has a good rest and moderate physical activity. It is proved that gymnastic exercises (at a stage when patients can move) prolong the period of remission and strengthen the defenses of the body.

The best option is the passage of the rehabilitation period in a specialized institution of a sanatorium-resort type. In such sanatoriums, as a rule, a special diet is developed for people who underwent liver surgery.

Fruits, berries and vegetables can be eaten without any restrictions. The only exception is tomatoes, which are recommended for limited use in liver cancer. Freshly squeezed juices are useful, especially vegetable.

With oncological diseases, the beetroot juice is considered medicinal – it can be drunk every day from 0,5 liters and more.

The list of foods and foods useful in liver cancer include:

  • milk soups;
  • cereals and vegetable soups;
  • pasta;
  • cottage cheese;
  • fermented milk products – kefir, yogurt, yogurt, fermented baked milk;
  • white dietary meat;
  • sea fish;
  • seafood:
  • legumes (in moderation);
  • bread from wholemeal flour;
  • fresh fruits, vegetables, greens;
  • muesli;
  • nuts;
  • germs of grains;
  • fresh juices;
  • herbal decoctions;
  • green tea.

From strong tea and drinks with caffeine is better to give up altogether. It is better to use vegetable decoctions (special herbal preparations recommended for liver diseases), green tea or mineral water without gas.

Products to be excluded

The liver is involved not only in the process of purifying blood from toxic substances, but is a direct participant in the digestive process. In the liver, enzymes are produced that promote digestion.

In liver cancer, food should in no case be called “heavy”, that is, it is difficult to digest.

Do not eat the following foods:

  • sugar;
  • sugar substitutes;
  • products with starch content;
  • carbonated drinks;
  • fat meat;
  • fast food;
  • semi-finished and fast food;
  • condensed milk;
  • canned food;
  • any products in which there are dyes, flavors, flavor enhancers;
  • margarine and butter;
  • pickled foods and pickles;
  • coffee;
  • cocoa;
  • baking, white bread, confectionery;
  • sweets (chocolate, sweets).

Of course, any alcoholic beverages should not be consumed by people with oncological neoplasms of the liver (both before surgery and after). In this case, even low-alcohol drinks (especially beer) act on liver cells is disastrous.

The fact is that if you get into the body of ethanol, the liver produces a special enzyme – alcohol dehydrogenase, but with a malignant organ damage the enzyme is not produced and alcohol literally kills the hepatic tissue.

Instead of sugar and sugar replacers, dieticians sometimes advise eating natural honey or candy. Do not harm several spoons of jam once every few days.
